The Royal House of Savoy

As one of Europe’s most prestigious royal families, the House of Savoy established the Kingdom of Italy in 1861. Following the Second World War, Italy transitioned from a monarchy to a republican system of government and entered a new era as the Italian Republic. Today, the Royal House of Savoy is primarily engaged in works of charity that are in the interest of world peace.

Dynastic Orders of the Royal House of Savoy

To this day, the Royal House of Savoy has the following five chivalric orders:

– The Supreme Order of the Most Holy Annunciation
– The Military and Religious Order of the Saints Maurice and Lazarus
– The Order of the Crown of Italy
– The Civil Order of Savoy, and
– The Savoy Order of Merit

The Military and Religious Order of the Saints Maurice and Lazarus is an order of knight that traces its roots back to the provision of assistance to Christian pilgrims, and is one of the four oldest orders of knighthood still in existence. (The other three are the Knights of Saint John, Knights of Templar, and Teutonic Knights.)

It was originally established for the purpose of operating hospitals, providing protection from sea pirates, and engaging in military campaigns against non-Christians.

During the leprosy epidemic that spread across Italy in the 18th century, this Order energetically worked to acquire textile mills, expand hospital wards, and open new pediatric wards in an effort to improve the environment for patients who had been placed in squalid conditions.

The Order earned broad approval and appreciation from monarchs in other countries for its spirit of devotion to the treatment of leprosy and other illnesses, its activities in the military, religious, and cultural spheres, and in particular, its hospital operations.

Social contributions and charity work are the principal activities of the Order even today. Those activities, moreover, have been extended in scope by 40 delegations now in service worldwide.

Japan Delegation of Savoy Orders

The Royal House of Savoy has enjoyed close ties with Japan for many years. As a result, successive generations of Emperors as well as modern era political leaders and prestigious scholars have been welcomed into the knighthood.

The Japan Delegation has grown increasingly active in recent years. In addition to holding charity gala events with the participation of the Prince and Grand Masters of the Orders, it has also been involved in nominating candidates for knighthood. Inducted knights include film directors that have earned awards at the world’s largest film festivals as well as Japanʼs leading artists.

The educational program for children described elsewhere on this web page is one of the Japan Delegation’s charity undertakings. The program harnesses the latest accomplishments of modern cognitive science to interpret and provide training in the concepts underpinning the knight’s code of conduct.

Going forward, we will continue to give progress reports on the implementation of this program and the social contributions made by our knights.
